The circular economy is an internationally prominent approach to increasing resource efficiencies and reducing carbon emissions by designing and using products to obtain the maximum value from materials and minimising waste. This session will introduce the concept, briefly review UK and EU policies to support the circular economy and draw on examples from research being conducted at the University of Hull (e.g., in the Cresting project) to assess the sustainability implications of a circular economy.
Regarding the situation of plastic waste in Thailand, This session will also present a research work on how to convert plastic waste from packaging into fuel (with and without catalyst). Then, the properties of the obtained fuel with commercial fuel in Thailand (e.g. diesel, gasohol 91) will be compared specifically. In addition, the use of obtained fuel in a real engine (e.g. gasoline brush cutter, diesel pump) and its CO and CO2 emission will also be presented systemically. In this session, Jana Busch, a PhD student in the Geography Department at the University of Hull, will explore together with you the topic of circular plastic use on university campuses. Plastics are a significant element of the global production industry and economy yet cause major concern for disastrous environmental impacts such as marine pollution. Plastics, in particular single-use plastic, are omnipresent on university campuses through cafeteria outlets, take-away food, packaging and most recently, increased hygiene requirements like PPE. This generates large quantities of plastic waste on campus.
More and more universities are recognizing their plastic waste as an issue they’d like to tackle and start implementing a more circular approach to reduce plastic use. In this session, we are going to learn about the role of universities can play to drive a circular economy. Further, we hope to exchange and draw on your experiences of plastic use at the University of Khon Kaen. This session comprises part of the data collection for Jana’s PhD. If you are interested to participate, we will send more information and an informed consent form. Any information gained through this workshop will be used anonymously. |
This session will explore how Citizen Science has been used in the past by researchers to collect and synthesise large volumes of data using the public to assist as data collectors.
It will explore some of the ethical concerns and issues associated with this approach and will outline, with examples, how Citizen Inquiry can address some of these problems. 13th April 2021 09:30 - 10:30 UK time Zoom Recording Link : https://us02web.zoom.us/rec/share/s80lRX5vUGtpyKtUqjnbPuQkH6RH-VtfCUFyDaLO8YdFnBhdsduuKWIP2HcUhPi0.HPq9Grhikg4QqDsZ?startTime=1618306228000 |
This session will focus on how Citizen Science/Inquiry can be used by policy makers to actively engage citizens with the process of decision making and help shape policy on matters such as the environment, data misinformation and healthcare.
It will showcase the award-winning nQuire platform (nquire.org.uk) - developed with support from the Open University/BBC partnership and used extensively by academic and non academic organisations in the UK to support Citizen Inquiry - as a tool to structure and manage policy-related investigations. This session will explore different methodologies and approaches to participatory research and will examine the advantages and challenges associated with involving participants more directly in the research process.
It will include illustrations from several current and recent projects led by colleagues in the School of Education at the University of Hull, including Citizen Inquiry projects and work with young people in Vietnam as part of a British Academy project June 9th 2021 10:30 - 11:30 UK time Zoom Recording Link : https://us02web.zoom.us/rec/share/l20DjpzGDc1Qv_ENgWQlkT_FJHrReQWFDJPpzujoOb1vOGFIq0Q_1H0Iw1oo01aE.OzOdj2OE2593b63T?startTime=1623231296000 |
This session will extend the previous two sessions focused on participatory approaches to research, but with a specific focus on approaches and challenges associated with working with children and young people. It will include input from a number of researchers at the University of Hull who have pioneered different ways in which to engage young people as researchers, including the benefits and challenges associated with these approaches.

In this final session we will explore how digital technologies (i.e. ARC GIS; Drone technology; 360 cameras; animation/film; digital apps) , including personal devices like mobile phones and tablets, drone and 360 video cameras can be used to support and enhance the process of participatory research.
